Baker & McKenzies Tax Lawyers Recognized by International Tax Review
This year, International Tax Review has highlighted the performance of Baker & McKenzie Mexico´s Tax Group. The distinction was awarded to members from the Tax Litigation and Indirect Taxes teams for their quality work on various matters where they have participated in. Considered one of the leading resources for tax professionals around the world, International Tax Review is a publication that analyzes changes in taxes, noteworthy agreements, and current issues and provides recommendations on leading tax firms and practices.
The publication´s third edition of the Tax Controversy Leaders feature, Partners Luis Carbajo and Ulises Castilla as well as Senior Associate Juan Carlos Valles were highly recommended by clients and competitors, solidifying their place in the latest edition of the guide which aims to define the leading consultants operating in the litigation and tax controversy fields.
Similarly, Partners Hector Reyes, Jorge Narváez and Ronaldo Moya will be included in the ranking for the second edition of the Indirect Tax Leaders Guide based on the recommendation of customers and peers in this edition intended to identify the top professionals in the area of indirect taxes over 30 countries worldwide.
Héctor Reyes Freaner serves as coordinator of Mexico´s Tax Group and head of the Tax Compliance of the Firm´s Mexican offices. He also sits on the Firm´s Tax Committee for Latin America. He has 20 years of experience advising multinational companies on tax planning, M&A transactions, corporate taxes and indirect taxes, and is regarded as one of Mexico’s best tax lawyers.
Luis Carbajo has extensive experience in the areas of international tax planning, mergers and acquisitions, permanent establishment issues, cross-border transactions, inter-company pricing, taxation of individual and legal entities residing abroad, associated corporate taxes and other taxes like Value Added Tax and IETU, as well as planning and litigation in matters of social security dues and other local and municipal taxes.
Jorge Narváez has more than 27 years of professional experience to back him up as an international corporate tax, transfer pricing and tax and administrative litigation specialist. On May 2012 he was appointed by the Mexican President as an Independent Counselor of the Office of the Taxpayer Advocate´s Governing Board (Prodecon). Graduated from the Escuela Libre de Derecho, with a Master of Law from the University of Notre Dame and other post-graduate studies at Harvard University, ITAM and the International Bureau of Fiscal Documentation. He is a member of the Tax Law Commission of the Mexican Bar Association, the International Bar Association and the International Fiscal Association as well as a founding member of Legislative Tax Analysis (ATRIL), he has also has served as Regional Coordinator for the Latin America Tax Group and as member of the Global Tax Committee at Baker & McKenzie. Currently he acts as coordinator of the Indirect Tax Group at the regional level in Latin America and a member of Global Indirect Tax Committee of Baker & McKenzie.
Ulises Castilla has a deep understanding of tax issues related to financial institutions as well as company consolidation for tax purposes. Prior to joining the Firm, he was the Central Litigation Administrator of Large Taxpayers for the Tax Administration Service (SAT), a decentralized body of the Ministry of Finance and Public Credit. He is an accomplished keynote speaker on tax matters at various seminars organized by the Mexican Bar Association, the University of San Diego California, Mexico´s Accounting Institute, EuroSocial, IFA Commission, and other prominent associations and universities.
Ronaldo Moya has more than 12 years of professional experience as an attorney handling international tax matters for multinational companies involved in in the energy, manufacturing, IT, media and entertainment, telecommunications, financial services, insurance and pharmaceutical industries. Graduated from the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México, with post-graduate studies of the Escuela Libre de Derecho and other studies from Georgetown University. Prior to joining the Firm, he worked for the Federal Government in the International Legal Affairs Administration of the Tax Administration Service (SAT). Mr. Moya´s practice covers general tax planning, corporate taxes, mergers and acquisitions, taxation of non-resident individuals, as well as tax litigation. Mr. Moya has also contributed with publications for "Practical Mexican Tax Strategies" and "IDC Asesor Jurídico Fiscal".
Juan Carlos Valles advises companies in the fields of international tax planning, permanent establishment, taxation of individual and legal entities residing abroad, cross-border transactions, corporate taxes, IETU, and Value Added Tax. He was member of the International Trade Practice for several years. Mr. Valles has participated in various relevant complex litigation and tax matters. He has a Masters Degree in International Business Law from ITESM Campus Monterrey, and a Masters in Law from Columbia University in New York.
