Holland & Knight Grows in Mexico with 17 Lawyers from Sánchez DeVanny

Holland & Knight has significantly strengthened its Mexico practice with the addition of 17 lawyers from Mexican law firm Sánchez DeVanny. The group includes seven partners, two senior counsels and eight associates who have joined Holland & Knight’s Mexico City and Monterrey offices. The attorneys focus mainly on the areas of corporate law, international trade, labor, social security, compliance, FCPA and environmental law, ESG and represent numerous clients involved in Mexico’s industrial sector.

Partners Gerardo Prado Hernández, Francisco Andrés Gámez Garza, Humberto Morales Barrón, José Ricardo Ibarra Córdova, Jaime Israel Moreno Treviño and Oscar Alejandro Quiroz Chávez and Senior Counsel Rogelio Azcárraga Ibargüengoitia have joined in Monterrey, along with six associates.
Partner Turenna Ramírez Ortiz and Senior Counsel Claudia Georgina García-González have joined Holland & Knight’s Mexico City office, along with two associates.

With these new additions, Holland & Knight now has 62 attorneys headquartered in Mexico. In 2021, Holland & Knight welcomed 13 new attorneys and added a new office in Monterrey as a result of the firm’s combination with Thompson & Knight. In February, the firm celebrated the 10th anniversary of its office in Mexico City.

"This is a transformational moment in the history of our firm’s Latin America practice," said Roberto Pupo, head of Holland & Knight’s Latin America Practice Group. "The addition of this exceptionally talented group of lawyers gives our Mexico practice a broader reach and in-depth knowledge in practice areas that are experiencing significant growth in Mexico, and it allows us to offer services to our clients wherever they are doing business – whether in the U.S., Mexico or throughout the hemisphere. In addition, our new lawyers in Mexico also bring decades of collective leadership experience, which will be put to good use as we continue to build our brand in Mexico."

"This transaction has been met with widespread enthusiasm and support among our lawyers in Mexico and will be noticed in the Mexican market", said Luis Rubio Barnetche, executive partner of Holland & Knight’s Mexico City office. "Each one of these partners is experienced and knowledgeable within their practice areas. Their skills are complementary to those of our existing lawyers, with very little duplication of talent. We are very pleased to join forces with this outstanding team."
"The timing of the group’s arrival couldn’t be better," said Gabriel Ruiz, executive partner of Holland & Knight’s Monterrey office. "Mexico is the beneficiary of a global push for companies to nearshore their operations and Monterrey, specifically, is experiencing considerable economic growth as a result. The expansion of our office will directly benefit the firm’s global clients who are considering investments in Mexico."

"From the start it was obvious that Holland & Knight was a good fit both economically and culturally", said Gerardo Prado Hernández. "The firm’s international platform and its sharp focus on Latin America is truly distinctive in the market. This move will allow our team to fully develop our practices and offer a more comprehensive set of services to clients, especially those with interests in the U.S."

Gerardo Prado Hernández regularly advises local and international clients on corporate, mergers and acquisitions, renewable energy matters, and general regulatory compliance matters. He previously served as co-administrator and managing partner of Sánchez DeVanny from 2005 to 2014.

Humberto Morales Barrón is the former head of Sánchez Devanny’s Corporate Governance and Regulatory Compliance practice group. Prior to working at Sánchez Devanny, Mr. Morales Barrón worked at General Electric for more than a decade, most recently as its general counsel for Mexico, Central America & Caribbean.

Francisco Andrés Gámez Garza is a transactional lawyer with extensive experience advising clients in corporate, mergers and acquisitions, general financing, joint ventures, business structuring, divestitures, sales, spinoffs, soft-landing and general corporate transactions.
