Jaime Carey Highlights Success of IBA Conference in Lima
"We must continue to defend the rule of law, the independence of the judiciary, and the legal profession"
In a vibrant display of legal camaraderie, the International Bar Association (IBA) convened an impressive conference in Lima, attracting nearly 800 delegates. Jaime Carey, serving as the IBA President, expressed his enthusiasm for both the city and the event. "It is a pleasure to be in Lima again. I have to say that I am very impressed with the city as it has had many positive changes since the last time I was here," he remarked.
Carey praised the Latin American Regional Forum (LARF) for organizing a "wonderful and interesting program" that fostered interaction among various Latin American Bar Associations. He noted the significant role of networking and camaraderie, which are hallmarks of the LARF.
Addressing the pressing issues facing the legal profession, Carey emphasized the importance of defending the rule of law and the independence of the judiciary amidst global challenges. "The world is going through a difficult moment, which is also impacting the legal profession worldwide," he stated, highlighting the issue of legal uncertainty in Latin America.
Carey also touched upon the rapid advancements in artificial intelligence, encouraging legal professionals to adapt to these changes. "I am not pessimistic... this is just a further evolution which takes place very fast on a daily basis," he asserted, drawing parallels with the introduction of the internet.
He concluded by stressing the need for a revamped legal education system in Latin America, advocating for a more Socratic method and the inclusion of AI in the curriculum. The conference’s success showcased both the resilience and adaptability of the legal community in addressing contemporary challenges.
Juan Manuel Mercant, Co-Chair of the Latin America Regional Forum (LARF), said: ‘It was an excellent conference, with a wide variety of panels presenting inspiring stories, and as always, it was a networking opportunity to connect and learn about the experiences of other jurisdictions. A success!’
