Madrid hosts landmark opening of ICCA Congress at Teatro Real

April 13, 2026

Welcome to the world’s largest event in international arbitration

Madrid has formally opened the 27th edition of the International Council for Commercial Arbitration (ICCA) Congress with a high-profile ceremony at the Teatro Real, setting the tone for four days of discussion on the evolution of global dispute resolution.

The event, widely regarded as the leading global gathering in international arbitration, brought together practitioners, arbitrators, academics and in-house counsel from across jurisdictions, reinforcing the city’s positioning as a key arbitration hub in Europe and the Ibero-American sphere.

The opening ceremony featured remarks from Stanimir Alexandrov, President of ICCA and a leading figure in investor–state and commercial arbitration, who underscored the Congress’s longstanding influence in shaping arbitration practice globally.

"This Congress has consistently demonstrated its capacity to advance the field of international dispute resolution," Alexandrov noted in his address, describing ICCA as a "must-attend event" for arbitration practitioners.

The ceremony blended institutional remarks with a curated cultural programme, reflecting Spain’s legal and artistic heritage. Performances by the Intermezzo Choir included selections from Verdi, Delibes and Offenbach, alongside excerpts from Nabucco and Lakmé. A second segment incorporated works by Puccini and Penella, while the Aída Gómez Dance Company joined the choir in a programme featuring pieces from Carmen and La verbena de la Paloma.

The combination of classical repertoire and Spanish zarzuela was designed to align with the Congress’s broader objective of showcasing Madrid’s cultural identity alongside its arbitration infrastructure.

Further remarks were delivered by the ICCA 2026 Madrid Host Committee co-chairs — María José Menéndez, Alfonso Iglesia, David Arias and Patricia Saiz — who emphasised the depth of expertise within Madrid’s arbitration community and its connections to the broader Ibero-American network.

The host committee, linked to the Club Español e Iberoamericano del Arbitraje, has positioned the Congress as a platform to bridge regional and international perspectives.

The 2026 Congress will revolve around the theme "International Arbitration: Local, Global or Both?", reflecting ongoing debates regarding the harmonisation of standards and the preservation of regional legal traditions.

The programme committee, chaired by Samaa Haridi, Vladimir Pavi and Tom Sikora, has assembled a series of panels and workshops addressing procedural convergence, enforcement challenges and the role of cultural context in arbitral decision-making.

Organisers indicated that discussions will examine how arbitration can maintain coherence as a global system while remaining responsive to local legal frameworks — a tension increasingly relevant in investor-state and commercial disputes.
The opening concluded with a cocktail reception in the Teatro Real’s salons, accompanied by a performance from Pablo Navarro & The Brass Band, providing delegates with an initial opportunity to engage informally ahead of the substantive sessions.

With attendance spanning multiple continents, the ICCA Congress once again consolidates its status as the pre-eminent forum for arbitration discourse, combining technical debate with institutional networking at the highest level.
