The Legal Community mourns the Passing of Michael Reynolds, Former IBA President
The International Bar Association (IBA) has announced its profound sadness at the passing of Michael Reynolds, former President International Bar Association (2013–2014), who died on 26 January 2025.
A member of the IBA for four decades, Michael was known for his compassion and commitment to social justice. As President, he emphasized his intention to examine how the lives of the underprivileged are destabilized and to focus on enhancing their access to justice while protecting them from exploitation and trafficking, in alignment with the United Nations trafficking protocol.
Before becoming President, he held several senior positions within the IBA, including Vice-President, Secretary-General, Chair of the Legal Practice Division, Chairman of the Antitrust and Trade Law Committee, and Councillor Emeritus. He was also honored as an Honorary Life Member of the IBA.
Michael established Allen & Overy’s Brussels office in 1979 and remained there until his passing.
IBA’s current President, Jaime Carey, stated: ’We are profoundly saddened by the passing of Michael Reynolds. He was a true landmark and one of the greatest figures in the IBA community. His absence will be deeply felt, and he will be cherished in our memories. Our heartfelt condolences go out to his husband, David, Michael’s family, and the A&O Shearman team during this difficult time.’
