The session Mining and Geopolitics: Complexities around the World was held by the Mining Committee of the International Bar Association during its annual conference in Mexico, and discussed the geopolitical risks that mining companies face and how the energy transition is transforming the geopolitical role in mining.

The panel was moderated by Miyanou Dufour from Hernandez & Cía (Perú), Diversity and Inclusion Officer of the IBA and member of its Mining Law Committee, and composed by experts in the field from different jurisdictions: Geert Aalbers - Control Risks, Brazil; Ana Isabel Gaviria - Mineros SA, Colombia; Patricia Kosa - Sierra Metals, Perú/Mexico and Simon Morris - CRU Group, England.

The panellists shared their experience in the identification and handling of the challenges and risks in a context of increasing political instability and competing strategic interests among different jurisdictions worldwide.



The Mining Law Committee of the International Bar Association seeks to promote the interchange of information and views, and to advance knowledge among individual members of the committee and others as to laws, practices and procedures affecting all activities concerning minerals and mining throughout the world. The committee is part of the Section on Energy, Environment, Natural Resources and Infrastructure Law.
