General Counsel Roundtable: Legaltech and Innovation

March 21, 2025

The Biennial IBA Latin American Regional Forum Conference: The Road to 2030 in Latin America brought together leading lawyers and experts from the region in Lima to discuss key issues related to the economic, social, political and legal development of Latin America.

At the IBA in Lima, our last panel of the conference, the one between Machu Pichu, Paracas or all of the beauties Peru has to offer, took place. A whole challenge to get the attention of everyone. But, mission accomplished!

Paulo Rocha, partner at Demarest and myself had the pleasure to moderate an amazing group of female colleagues:

•  Gaby Colombo: CRM at Mercado Libre
•  Karen Kamelman: AI studio legal reinvention at Globant
•  Flavia Ribeiro da Silva: GC at Minerva Foods
•  Anabeli Gonzalez: GC at BBVA in Peru

Among others, they told us how AI came to their professional life and changed their roles and their leadership.

They exchanged views on:

1) current application of AI and machine learning tools to streamlin legal processes, and what specific tasks or workflows have seen the most improvement;

2) costs savings and time efficiency

3) tools in compliance monitoring and risk management

4) challenges encountered while integrating AI and automation into legal operations (employee training, system compatibility, or resistance to change).

Last but not least, "the" question was raised: "What do you expect law firms should be doing today in terms of AI adoption? And in the near future?
