Guatemala reaches an agreement with the USA to reduce and eliminate tariffs

November 24, 2025

EY Law - In April 2025, the Government of the United States of America imposed a minimum tariff of 10% on all imports into the country, affecting several countries, including those in Latin America.

On November 13, 2025, both governments publicly announced that Guatemala and the United States of America had agreed on a framework for the establishment of a "Reciprocal Trade Agreement" to enhance and strengthen the trade relationship between both countries.

Under the terms of the negotiated agreements, the United States committed to eliminating tariffs on Guatemalan exports corresponding to approximately 70% of the products that Guatemala exports to that country, resulting in a zero tariff for those products (according to official information from the Government of Guatemala), whilst other may be benefited with a reduced rate.

Following the official signing of this agreement, a list of applicable products will be made of public knowledge.

In return, Guatemala committed to reducing and eliminating non-tariff barriers to facilitate trade and investment between both countries. This includes measures such as simplifying regulatory requirements and approval processes for exports to the United States of America, effectively implementing international treaties on intellectual property, facilitating digital trade, among others.
