In Memoriam: Fernando de la Mata
Pérez-Llorca is deeply saddened to announce the passing of their esteemed partner, Fernando de la Mata. The firm extends its heartfelt condolences to his wife, Gemma, his children, Mariona and Fernando, and his extended family and friends during this challenging time.
Fernando joined Pérez-Llorca in 2022 as a partner in the Litigation and Arbitration practice, bringing with him a wealth of experience from leading Spanish and international law firms. His extensive expertise encompassed civil and commercial judicial proceedings, covering areas such as corporate law, banking, fundamental rights, obligations, and contracts arising from M&A transactions and joint ventures, as well as civil liability. He also served as both an arbitrator and counsel in various arbitration proceedings.
Known for his integrity, warmth, and camaraderie, Fernando built lasting relationships with clients and colleagues alike. His legacy will endure through his professional achievements and the deep connections he fostered within the firm and the broader legal community.
Fernando earned a Diploma in Research Proficiency from the Universitat de Barcelona in 1994, a Master’s Degree in Community Law from the University of Liège (Belgium) in 1992, and a Degree in Law from the Universitat de Barcelona in 1991. Fluent in Spanish, Catalan, English, and French, he adeptly navigated diverse legal environments.
He actively contributed to the legal community as a member of the drafting team for the UNIDROIT Principles of Transnational Civil Procedure. Additionally, he served as an associate professor of private international law at ESADE Law School and lectured in the Master’s Degree in Law program at UPF.
Fernando was also a member of the Barcelona Bar Association (ICAB) and received numerous accolades throughout his career, including recognition in Chambers Europe for Dispute Resolution and in Best Lawyers for ‘Arbitration and Mediation,’ ‘Insolvency and Reorganization Law,’ and ‘Litigation’ since 2012.
